Paul Gunter, former member of the Clamshell Alliance and current Director of the Reactor Oversight Project for Beyond Nuclear, answers questions from the attendees. The issues covered by his answers include:
- Problems with the Fukushima GE Mark I Boiling Water Reactors and the amount of spent fuel they have on site. The US has 22 GE Mark I reactors.
- The Vermont Yankee nuclear plant has 600 metric tons of spent nuclear fuel sitting on what amounts to a non-hardened, terrorist susceptible building roof. That is more nuclear waste than all five Fukushima reactors combined.
- The limited financial liability of US nuclear utilities offered by the Price Anderson Act, should another US nuclear accident occur. That means companies, land and business owners could potentially only get reimbursed for a fraction of their losses.
- Problems with the new breed of smaller nuclear reactor being proposed for construction.
